Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike closed and detoured tomorrow in West Milford, Morris County

Closure necessary for temporary bridge installation

(Trenton) – The Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694 is scheduled to be closed and detoured tomorrow as the Route 23 Bridge over Pequannock River/Hamburg Turnpike replacement project advances in Kinnelon, Morris County.From 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, September 10, the ramp from Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694 onto Route 23 northbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured. The closure is necessary for the installation of a temporary bridge that will be used later in the project during the demolition and reconstruction of the Route 23 Bridge over Pequannock River/Hamburg Turnpike. Route 23 traffic will not be affected. The following detour will be in place:


Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694 Detour:

  • Motorists on Route 23 southbound wishing to take the ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/High Crest Road/Bloomingdale will be directed to continue on Route 23 southbound

  • Take the ramp to Kinnelon/Butler

  • Turn left onto Kinnelon Road/CR 618, which becomes Kiel Avenue

  • Turn left onto Park Avenue

  • Turn right onto Main Street, which becomes Hamburg Turnpike/CR 694


The work is part of the $78.2 million federally funded Route 23, Bridge over Pequannock River/Hamburg Turnpike project located between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 on the border of West Milford, Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon, Morris County. The bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike and railroad tracks will be replaced, and drainage and utility improvements will be made. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2028.
