Morris County Declares Operation Green Light for Veterans Week
Resolution Marks Nation’s 250th Anniversary with a Nod to Jockey Hollow
The Morris County Board of County Commissioners last night adopted a resolution declaring Nov. 4 through Nov. 12, 2026, as Operation Green Light for Veterans Week in Morris County, urging residents, businesses and schools to shine green lights in honor of the men and women who have served the nation.
The National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers annually organizes the campaign every Nov. 4 through Veterans Day, Nov. 11. However, Morris County is extending it by one day, to cover Nov. 12 – the evening when the Commissioners will hold a special ceremony to honor six local veterans with Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medals.
Operation Green Light for Veterans Week began in 2021 in New York and has since grown into a national movement involving hundreds of counties. This will be the second year Morris County has participated.
Green lights are intended to let veterans know they are seen, appreciated and supported, and to point them toward the county services available to help. According to NACo, approximately 200,000 service members transition from military to civilian life each year.
The Commissioners proclaimed Operation Green Light Week for Veterans by special resolution that also recognizes the nation’s 250th anniversary. Morris County can trace its military heritage back to the beginning of the Continental Army, which spent the winter of 1776 to 1777 in Morristown following the victories at Trenton and Princeton, and the brutal winter of 1779 to 1780, when soldiers encamped nearby at Jockey Hollow, enduring 28 snowstorms, bitter cold, hunger and meager supplies, but remained loyal to the cause of independence.
