Howard Boulevard temporary stoppages Friday as I-80 bridge replacement project advances in Mount Arlington

Possible detour of Howard Boulevard southbound

(Trenton) – Howard Boulevard is scheduled to have temporary traffic stoppages in both directions Friday night as the I-80 Bridges over Howard Boulevard bridge replacement project advances in Mount Arlington, Morris County.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, October 16 until 6 a.m. Saturday, October 17, Howard Boulevard is scheduled to have temporary traffic stoppages from the I-80 Bridges to just past the intersection with the Mount Arlington Train Station to restripe the roadway and shift traffic, as well as activate new traffic signals at the intersection. New Jersey State Police will be assisting with the traffic stoppages.

At least one lane is expected to be maintained in each direction. However, if necessary, Howard Boulevard southbound will be detoured to assist with restriping work and traffic signal activation, improving safety for the motoring public and crews in the work zone. The following detour will be in place, if necessary:

Howard Boulevard southbound Detour:

  • Motorists on Howard Boulevard southbound will be directed to take the ramp to I-80 westbound

  • Take Exit 28 to Route 46 East to Route 10/Ledgewood/Lake Hopatcong

  • Stay right to take the ramp to Lake Rogerene/Lake Hopatcong East Shore/U Turn

  • Turn left onto Shippenport Road

  • Stay in the right lane to take the ramp to Route 46 East to Route 10/Ledgewood

  • Continue on Landing Road/CR 631, which becomes Route 46

  • Turn left to continue on Route 46, where Route 46 intersects Route 10, back to Howard Boulevard/Commerce Boulevard

By 6 a.m. Saturday, October 17, all lanes on Howard Boulevard will be reopened with traffic shifted. Howard Boulevard northbound will be shifted to the right towards the right shoulder, and Howard Boulevard southbound will be shifted to the left towards Howard Boulevard northbound. This pattern is expected to remain in place through December 2026 and is necessary to make intersection improvements.

The $65.4 million federally funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying I-80 eastbound and I-80 westbound over Howard Boulevard/CR 516, which are in poor condition. Improvements will include raising the vertical clearance of each bridge, widening the shoulders, lengthening acceleration and deceleration lanes on I-80, and widening the ramps to and from Howard Boulevard. The Howard Boulevard intersection will be reconfigured to improve operational performance.

The project will also include upgraded traffic signals and lighting, and ADA-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be extended to the Mount Arlington Train Station for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
