I-80 westbound repairs taking longer than expected

All lanes in both directions still on schedule to reopen June 25

(Trenton) – The permanent long-term repair of I-80 is progressing, but work to reopen two lanes on I-80 westbound is taking longer than anticipated, in Wharton, Morris County. All lanes in both directions are on schedule to reopen by June 25.

I-80 Westbound

Under the original schedule, I-80 westbound was expected to have two lanes reopened by May 4. It is now expected that two lanes will be reopened by the end of May. The delay is due to the sonic drilling taking longer than expected. Sonic drilling creates less vibration and is necessary for installing micropiles near the Route 15 Bridge on I-80 westbound. All piles are expected to be completed next week. Once the micropiles are installed, excavation will begin in preparation for construction of the concrete slabs.

I-80 Eastbound

I-80 eastbound work is progressing on schedule, and two lanes are expected to reopen in mid-May. Excavation work on the eastbound side is nearing completion, and concrete pours are expected to begin next week.

There are two separate crews working concurrently – one on the eastbound side and one on the westbound side – to expedite repairs. Crews worked on Easter and will continue working 24 hours a day until repairs are completed and the highway reopened. NJDOT will continue to look for any avenues to pick up time on both sides, if possible.

NJDOT has created an I-80 project web page to keep the public informed about the progress of repairs. Information about detours, alternate routes, and other options to minimize traffic congestion in the area can also be found on the web page.

A new I-80 travel time page has been added to www.511NJ.org and has current travel times on the detour routes and alternate routes.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information. For NJDOT news follow us on X (Twitter) @NewJerseyDOT, on the NJDOT Facebook page, or Instagram @NewJersey.DOT.
