Sure, it’s not directly on Lake Hopatcong. But Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is just a couple of miles away, and it’s the largest park in Morris County, spanning 3,200 acres and featuring more than 20 miles of multi-use trails. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation Address: Weldon Rd, Lake Hopatcong Phone: 973-326-7631 (Camping: 973-697-3140) Web: http://www.morrisparks.net/aspparks/mahlonmain.asp A trip to the Saffin Pond area of Mahlon Dickerson gives visitors a chance to walk or bike along an old railroad bed, passing through acres of protected wilderness and a pond for fishing. The area also features equestrian trails, a picnic area (with tables and charcoal grills), a pavilion, ballfield, exercise area, and horseshoe pit.
Headley Overlook is a great spot, with a view of Lake Hopatcong (on a clear day) and the rolling forested hills of northern New Jersey. Along the Pine Swamp trail, hikers can reach the highest point in Morris County (1,395 feet). For those who are interested in camping, Mahlon Dickerson features a camping area with tent sites and Adirondack shelters that include platforms, picnic tables, and fire rings. Those with camper trailers can find paved sites with electric and seasonal water hookups, picnic tables, and charcoal grills. Pets are welcome to the reservation, but must be kept on the leash. And the picnic areas and fitness stations include handicapped-accessible options. In the winter, visitors can go ice skating on Saffin Pond, play in the snowy fields, or cross-country ski or snowshoe along the trails.
