Water Trail through Musconetcong Watershed designated a National Trail

In an effort led by the Musconetcong Watershed Association, in partnership with the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, a system of water trails was created to promote recreational access within the Musconetcong Watershed. The Musconetcong Watershed National Water Trail, as it is now known, was recently added to the National Trails System by U.S. Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt. Other partners in the effort were Warren County, the Musconetcong River Management Council, and the Mohawk Canoe Club.
Currently, one of only six nationally designated trails in New Jersey, the Musconetcong Watershed National Water Trail includes routes along Lake Hopatcong, Lake Musconetcong, and the Musconetcong River, utilizing established public access points that accommodate a diversity of trip lengths and levels of ability.
A trail brochure offers information on 11 water trail trip segments, which provide access for recreation in natural, historic, and agricultural landscapes. Best for kayaks and canoes, conditions range from flatwater to advanced white water, in segments 4-12 miles long, or longer when combined. Entry and exit points are included in the brochure and signage will be added to main access points in the coming months.
“We are pleased to have collaborated with the Musconetcong Watershed Association and the other partners on this water trail project and look forward to future cooperative efforts,” said Cliff Lundin, Lake Hopatcong Foundation recreational trails committee chair. “This prestigious national designation recognizes Lake Hopatcong as a primary recreational waterway, not only within the Musconetcong Watershed but within the nation.”
