Roxbury Boy Scout Justin Cordeiro was recently named 2022 Scout of the Year by the Skylands District

ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury Boy Scout Justin Cordeiro was recently named 2022 Scout of the Year by the Skylands District, Patriots Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Cordeiro, a 21-year-old graduate of Roxbury High School, is an extended age Scout in Troop 188 of Landing.

He was nominated for the honor by Walter Burkat, a Roxbury High School language teacher and Eagle Scout. Cordeiro’s mother, Marcia, is also a language teacher at the Eisenhower Middle  School.

"Justin Cordeiro is an exceptional young man and the Boy Scouts of America are, without a doubt, lucky to have him among their ranks to Eagle,” said Burkat. “Justin exemplifies everything it means to be a true Scout.”

Justin Cordeiro will be attending County College of Morris in the fall. He currently works at the Walmart Supercenter in Ledgewood.

Mr. Burkat said Justin Cordeiro, is a “truly great scout,” one who is “dedicated to constantly improving himself daily.” Mr. Burkat also said Cordeiro's “work ethic is unsurpassed, and he is a true friend and Scout to his fellow Scouts. If someone were to look up Scout in the dictionary, they would find Justin ́s picture there.”

The award was given May 18 at the Skylands District, Patriots Path Council’s first annual Recognition Dinner at Picatinny Arsenal. “Justin Cordeiro was chosen immediately and unanimously by all in the Awards Committee,” said Skylands District Recognition Chair Bob Brady.

It was not the first award for Justin Cordeiro, who has been a Scout since 2011 and has 92 Merit Badges. He’s earned numerous other awards, including the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award, SCOUTStrong PALA and Nova Awards, and he’s served as a patrol leader, librarian, den chief, junior assistant scout master and as Troop 188 Senior Patrol Leader.
