Route 23 resurfacing project begins this week with temporary daytime closures in Morris County Closures necessary for prep work

(Trenton) – Route 23 is scheduled to have temporary lane closures in both directions on Thursday, July 6 and Friday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the Route 23, Alexander Avenue to Maple Lake Road Project begins in Morris County.

From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday, July 6, and again on Friday, July 7, at the same times Route 23 is scheduled to have temporary lane closures in both directions between Alexander Avenue in Pequannock through Maple Lake Road in Butler. The preliminary work needed to set up the project will be done using a moving operation. Over the next few months, electrical work will be done requiring shoulder closures, and on occasion lane closures. NJDOT will provide advance notice of any lane closures.

The $13.8 million Route 23, Alexander Road to Maple Lake Road Resurfacing Project will resurface approximately seven miles of Route 23 in both directions from Alexander Avenue in Pequannock through Riverdale, Kinnelon, and Butler to the bridge over the Pequannock River in Kinnelon, Morris County. In addition to resurfacing the road, traffic signals will be upgraded at 10 intersections, including the installation of new foundations and masts, pedestrian signal heads and bush buttons; ADA-compliant curb ramps will be added, and guiderail will be upgraded to meet current standards. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2025.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
