I-80 traffic shift and lane closures tonight as Bridges over Rockaway River project nears completion in Morris County

Eastbound traffic shift and westbound lane closures overnight

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced traffic shifts and lane closures on I-80 as the I-80 Bridges over Rockaway River replacement project nears completion in Roxbury, Jefferson, and Rockaway, Morris County. Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, October 8, NJDOT’s Contractor, I.E.W. Construction Group Inc., is scheduled to close one lane on I-80 eastbound and at 11 p.m. close a second lane at the Bridges over Rockaway River for roadway striping.

The striping will shift traffic into its final configuration. One lane of traffic will be maintained during the shift. All lanes will be reopened by 7 a.m. Saturday, October 9. In addition, at 8 p.m. tonight, one lane will be closed on I-80 westbound and at 11 p.m. a second lane will be closed at the Bridges over Rockaway River for final milling and paving.

Overnight paving work will continue for approximately one week with all lanes reopened to traffic by 7 a.m. each morning. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times. I-80 eastbound milling and paving will begin upon completion of the westbound work in upcoming weeks. NJDOT will provide information before any future lane closures.

The $20.8 million federally-funded project replaced both eastbound and westbound spans, which were in poor condition. In addition, the existing guiderail was brought up to current standards. The project was designed to advance in stages to minimize the impact on motorists, beginning with the eastbound span.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
