Hopatcong Woman’s Club’s Announces Scholarship Winners

Each year the Hopatcong Woman’s Club raises funds to be able to award two scholarships to Hopatcong High School senior students for their further education. The Elma Lant Scholarships originated decades ago, named for a long-time member and supporter of our organization.

The recipients for the Elma Lant scholarship for 2021 are Emily Contretas Ordenana and Philip Engle.

Emily is a senior at Hopatcong High School. She was our choice to send to Girls' Career Institute (GCI) when she was a junior, until it was canceled due to the pandemic. GCI is a mini-college experience for junior students held at Douglas College at Rutgers University. Emily's first language is Spanish. She came to the United States four years ago and she has done extremely well in her courses. She wants to be a child psychologist and will be attending Sussex County Community College.

Philip Engle is also a senior at Hopatcong High School. He wants to be a music teacher. Philip's passion is music, and he cannot wait to pass down his knowledge. He has participated in Concerts band and five other school music ensembles. Kurt Zimmermann, Director of bands at Hopatcong High, in his reference has stated, “I look forward to the day when we will be colleagues.” Mr. Zimmermann in his statement has highly praised Phillip. He will be attending William Patterson University.

The Hopatcong Woman’s Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month (from September to May) at the Elba Point Beach Club building located at 30 Ithanell Rd, Hopatcong, at 10:30am. There is no fee for attending a meeting and all are welcome. Follow us on Facebook or check out our Club’s Web site www.HopatcongWC.webs.com
