Hopatcong Woman’s Club Change of Seasons
Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Hopatcong Woman’s Club was busy over the summer in its “off-season.” As the new fall meeting schedule begins, we look forward to continuing the work we do for the local community and those in need.
We want to thank all those who supported our summer 50/50 raffle. This has been an especially important way for us to raise the necessary funds for awarding scholarships, due to our Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser being postponed for the second year in a row. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on our Facebook Live site on October 6th and we look forward to awarding the prize!
During Hopatcong Days 2021 in Modick Park on September 18th, we had adults and children make Veteran’s Day cards for Veterans at Lyons Healthcare Center. A fun and creative activity for all who participated, and the Veterans truly do appreciate the kindness.
We continue to collect supplies for I Support the Girls. This organization distributes essential items, including (new and gently used) bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products, allowing women experiencing homelessness, impoverishment, or distress to properly care for themselves. Our club members have participated in donating personally, and the community has participated by generously donating items for us at the Hopatcong Community Center, 47 Hopatchung Road, in the Walgreens Shopping Center. (Open boxes are OK, so long as products are individually wrapped.)
Also in great demand are large and small toiletry items (like hotel shampoos, soaps, etc.) and cosmetic bags for I Support the Girls, DASI (Domestic Abuse and Sexual Intervention Services), and Veterans. Our Club’s newest project is collecting large and small hand lotions, seasonal decorations, and Bingo prizes for the Valley View Nursing Home in Newton. Additionally, the Veterans Hospital is always looking for new men’s sneakers and socks for their patients.
Our annual Linen Shower for the DASI Safe House is in October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Twin sized bedding including sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, washcloths, etc. are all appreciated for those women and children that are displaced due to violence or an unsafe home environment. Contact any member or stop by our October meeting with donations and maybe stay and check us out!
Last but not least, Lisa Dell’Arena has been collecting and weighing the food that our community has donated for the local food pantry from the Hopatcong Borough Hall and Post Office. We thank her for taking on this task. As of September, she reports that we have collected 6,341 pounds of food! The colder months are coming, and the need will be ever greater, so please consider making a donation of non-perishable food items next time you visit. (Please no glass and check expiration dates.) It is appreciated!
The Hopatcong Woman’s Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month (from September to May) at the Elba Point Beach Club building located at 30 Ithanell Rd, Hopatcong, at 10:30am. There is no fee for attending a meeting and all are welcome. Follow us on Facebook or check out our Club’s Web site www.HopatcongWC.webs.com
