Steady rain does not dampen Jefferson’s tree lighting ceremony

JEFFERSON – The annual Christmas tree lighting event went on as planned Friday, despite a steady cold rain.
The nasty weather kept the crowds away but close to 100 residents, including the township middle school chorus, braved the elements to participate in the holiday festivities, singing Christmas carols and drinking hot chocolate.
Councilman Richard Yocum read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” as Santa made his way across Northern New Jersey to his destination at the township gazebo.
Eric Wilsusen and Debi Mertz, Citizens of the Year in 2014, were on hand to flip the switch and light the Christmas tree just before Santa’s arrival.
With help from Rudolph, Santa met with all the children, taking selfies with the older kids and handing out candy canes to everyone.
