Bassmaster, an organization of bass fishermen that includes more than a million members, ranked Lake Hopatcong number 68 in its list of the top 100 bass lakes in the United States. Lake Hopatcong was rated the top lake in New Jersey. The only other lake in the state to be ranked was the Manasquan Reservoir, at number 96. The lake has a strong contingent of anglers who fish everything from trout to walleye to muskies. But the bass fishing scene is extremely vibrant as well. Game and Fish Magazine described Lake Hopatcong as a "bass fisherman's mecca" because more than half of the lake's acreage is less than 15 feet deep. The abundance of docks around the lake also makes for a number of likely bass hideouts. The magazine reports that most smallmouth bass in Lake Hopatcong weigh in between 2 and 4 pounds, and most bigmouth bass weigh more than 5 or 6 pounds.
