MA Hosts Beach Volleyball Tournament

MOUNT ARLINGTON - The borough’s recreation board sponsored the first annual adult beach volleyball tournament on Saturday. The tournament was held at the new beach volleyball courts located near the Mount Arlington Public Beach. Four teams participated.
Each member of the winning the first and second place teams received gift cards to Sports Authority.
According to Michael Strickland, event chairman and chairman of the Board of Recreation, player entry fees covered prizes and bottled water for the event.
Strickland, a former volleyball player himself, said beach volleyball is a popular participation sport in town. Each night of the week a different age group uses the two sand courts for practice, instruction and games.
“We have 163 kids, teenagers and adults participating in our summer program,” said Strickland.
Mondays are reserved for teenagers. Tuesday the women take the court. Wednesday kids as little as six-years-old and up to twelve are on the courts. Thursday is for the men and Friday is coed adult time he said.
The tournament, which was open to residents and non-residents, attracted all levels of ability, from novice to advance.
Strickland is confident word of mouth about the tournament will help it grow.
“I think the next one is going to be even bigger,” he said.
