If you’re looking for a quiet place to take in the lake’s surrounding flora and fauna, make a stop at the Roland-May Eves Sanctuary in Hopatcong. Roland-May Eves Sanctuary Address: Northwood Avenue, Hopatcong, NJ Phone: (973) 770-1200 Maintained through the borough of Hopatcong, this sanctuary on Northwood Ave has a parking area just off a quiet inlet in the northwest corner of Lake Hopatcong. There are several lake access points at the parking lot, which allow visitors to view a shallow cove loaded with lily pads, turtles, frogs, fish, and other creatures. If you walk west from the parking lot and cross Northwood Ave, a bird blind looks over a wetlands and field area, offering views of herons, bald eagles, egrets, cardinals, robins, kingfishers, sparrows, chickadees, and wrens. If you walk east of the parking lot and turn into the first left, a short walk will take you to an access point for the Highlands Trail (look for the blue-green diamond blaze). Whether you stop for a few minutes or make an afternoon of it, a stop at the sanctuary will give visitors a chance to do what they most enjoy, whether that’s meditate, hike, bird watch, fish, or just take in the scenery.
