JEFFERSON — Police, firefighters and an unidentified woman rescued a Raccoon Island resident Sunday night after her row boat capsized on Lake Hopatcong. Terri Abma, 45, was attempting to reach her home in a row boat from the mainland at 6:48 p.m. when she fell into the lake, said Jefferson Sgt. Frank Gerndt.

A woman, whose identity is unknown to firefighters, heard Abma in the water and quickly got in her own boat to try and help, said Michael Rahill, an assistant chief with the Hopatcong Fire Department.

"She heard the woman's cries for help and went out with her own boat and held her next to the boat," Rahill said. The woman wasn't strong enought to pull Abma into her boat so she held her above water while waiting for the firefighters to arrive.
