The Lake Hopatcong Commission will hold a special work session next week to discuss long-term strategies regarding weed-harvesting maintenance, storage, and staffing.
The meeting, scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mt. Arlington Municipal Building (419 Howard Blvd, Mt. Arlington), will not be open for public comment, rather, it will be an informal gathering for commissioners to put together a plan for future harvesting efforts. The idea of a special work session emerged at the September Lake Hopatcong Commission meeting, when a discussion about funding strategies revealed the differences among commissioners regarding approaches.
The weed-harvesting effort was at first unfunded this year, but a last-minute agreement allowed for a scaled-back effort, supported by donations of time, space, and money from the counties and towns surrounding Lake Hopatcong and the state. Weeds that clog the main channels of the lake and some of its shallower sections were harvested, but much of the lake didn't get the level of attention it received in past years. The commissioners plan to get further ahead of the situation for the 2010 season.
October is likely to be a busy month for the commission. A committee that put together a business plan for the group, which explores funding options for the commission's entire budget, is expected to present the plan to the public at the regular October 19 meeting.
